Ghost Of A Chance

Ghost Of A Chance
My resolve has softened like butter,
You keep pushing my window wider.
Maybe this is you kissing me better,
Maybe you’ll be my lucky outsider.
I’m a greedy child, high on your sugar.
A storm chaser, braced for the thunder.
But if you shake me out of my fever,
You might keep me from breaking asunder.
If there’s a ghost of a chance,
If I pin all my hopes on you,
If I get a taste for romance,
Could you take a ghost of a chance on me too?
With my hand in yours, I am stronger.
When you look in my eyes, I remember,
I’m a queen these days, not a beggar!
I’m a fire these days, not an ember!
If there’s a ghost of a chance,
If I pin all my hopes on you,
If I get a taste for romance,
Could you take a ghost of a chance on me too?
We could rein in the sun,
Bake the day ‘til it’s done,
Juice the hours like a lime,
Drink their imperfect time.
And through my hollow night, would you hold me tight?
And could you stand to be loved by me?
If there’s a ghost of a chance,
If I pin all my hopes on you,
If I get a taste for romance,
Could you take a chance, take a chance, take a chance...
Oh, if there’s a ghost of a chance,
If I pin all my hopes on you,
If I get a taste for romance,
Could you take a ghost of a chance on me too...?

All Wild and Wicked Things
I still seek you out, wherever you are hiding.
I still tremble like a sparrow in your hand.
I keep leaving and then running back to find you,
For reasons even you don't understand.
And the flimsy little love-lines you have fed me
Always taste half-baked and underdone.
Still I sit up at the table like a good girl,
Lick my platter clean, then order up another one.
When at last you deliver me the long goodbye,
And the music and the memory start to fade,
Will the tears stop?
Will the penny drop?
Will I come to call you
The most glorious mistake I ever made?
I capsize on the crest of all your kisses.
I am hit and split and run aground on you.
Against the tide, against the good advice of many,
I mistook you for a love I could surrender to.
When at last you deliver me the long goodbye,
And the music and the memory start to fade,
Will the tears stop?
Will the penny drop?
Will I come to call you
The most glorious mistake I ever made?
All wild and wicked things are predisposed to love,
And my heart can hold more love than you can bear.
I come whole, and full, and open, and completely!
So go ahead and take it, if you dare...
When at last you deliver me the long goodbye,
And the music and the memory start to fade,
Will the tears stop?
Will the penny drop?
Will I come to call you
The most glorious mistake I ever made?
When at last you deliver me the long goodbye,
And the music and the memory start to fade,
Will the tears stop?
Will the penny drop?
Will I come to call you
The most glorious mistake I ever made?
The most glorious mistake I ever made...

We Will Have No More Marriages
You can tether me down to the ground.
Cover my cage, and I won’t make a sound.
I have scorned every free bird that chose not to fly,
Now wing-clipped and pinioned am I.
You can anchor my heart here in the sand,
And I’ll sink like a wreck in the palm of your right hand.
And let them all say, “She drowned in sin”,
‘Cos only you and I’ll know just how true I’ve been.
I will wear your embrace like a warm coat,
And the collar of kisses you’ve sewn at my throat.
And if ever my fickle heart leads me awry,
You can tug at the leash of my wandering eye.
So tether me down to the ground.
Cover my cage, and I won’t make a sound.
I have scorned ever free bird that chose not to fly,
Now wing-clipped and pinioned am I.

Take These Bones

Take These Bones
Take these bones and this heart and these lungs
And make from them what you will
To get you through the night.
You know that I’m extreme,
And subtlety’s lost on me,
So don’t burn if you can’t burn bright.
‘Cos I only like myself about half the time,
And I only like you a little bit more.
And I don’t have too much love left inside of me these days;
Remember you’re taxing the poor.
We’re like the sun and moon
We’re separate, but we stay in tune,
And together we light up the room.
And we’ll make success
Out of being a bloody mess,
And laugh all the way to our doom.
‘Cos I only like myself about half the time,
And I only like you a little bit more.
And I don’t have too much love left inside of me these days;
Remember you’re taxing the poor.
I’m first to admit, I’m a magnet for accidents,
And we’ve always had our fair share of those arguments,
But you know that I’m just a glutton for punishment,
So you’re doing just fine by me...
So take these hands and this kiss,
And we’ll lie here like this
‘Til boredom – or hatred – takes hold.
‘Cos I sort of love you,
And you sort of love me too,
And between us, we’ve sort of struck gold.
And I’ll try to like myself more than half the time,
‘Cos I really like you so very much more.
But I don’t have too much love left inside of me these days;
Remember you’re taxing the poor.
I’m first to admit, I’m a magnet for accidents,
And we’ve always had our fair share of those arguments,
But you know that I’m just a glutton for punishment,
So you’re doing just fine by me...
So take these bones and this heart and these lungs
And make from them what you will
To get you through the night.
